Table Mountain Hiking trails

ROUTE 1 – Platteklip Gorge

This Hike is perfect for those who have limited time, but who wish to experience the thrill of climbing Table Mountain. You start at the Lower Cableway Station, the Route taking you up, along a path, running directly below the Cable Way Car up to the Contour Path Junction. Here, bear left, along the Contour Path for about 30 minutes walk, before hitting the path heading up Platteklip Gorge. This Route, consisting of well laid out paths and steps built into the mountainside, takes you up Platteklip Gorge, on the front face of Table Mountain. The Hike is quite strenuous and requires a degree of fitness. On reaching the Top of Table Mountain, spend some time exploring, possibly taking a walk to Maclear’s Beacon, at 1 086 metre above Sea level, the highest point on Table Mountain, before hiking to the Upper Cable Way Station and heading down again via the Cable Car.

Part of the route entails some clambering over rocks, streams and up ladders. Once at the top, stop for a Tea Break, to enjoy the view over the Southern Suburbs as far as Cape of Good Hope and False Bay, before heading for Maclear’s Beacon, at 1 086 metres above Sea level, the highest point on Table Mountain. Here you can look over the entire City, Table Bay and Robben Falcon, and out towards the Winelands. After a photo stop, hike to the Upper Cable Way Station and head down via the Cable Car.
